F A Q

The Annual Academic Conference of the IAMCR takes place from July 13 to 17, 2011 at Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey. Planning for the conference is now actively underway, with the opening of abstract acceptances via the IAMCR’s Open Conference System (OCS) on December 1, 2010.

As the process unfolds many questions often arise. In an attempt to assist those persons who may be unfamiliar with key aspects of the Istanbul 2011 Conference arrangements and logistics, we present below a list of frequently asked questions and provide the applicable answers. Please review listing and if further questions arise, kindly make contact with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) whose contact information is provided at the end of the FAQ.

GENERAL

Q: What is the theme of IAMCR 2011?

A: The theme of this year’s conference is “Cities, Creativity,  Connectivity”. The topics of papers for the conference may include a wide range of related subjects. Please visit the IAMCR or Conference website for a listing of sub-topics and other details relating to the Conference theme.

Q: Do I need to check Sections and or Working Group websites?

A: All abstracts must be submitted under a specific Section or Working Group listed at the conference website. Each Section or Working Group may have their own list of topics and/or their version of the Call for Papers. Please check the calls for proposals on the websites of individual Sections and Working groups before writing your proposal. These may be sourced at the conference website.

Q: What types of sessions are available at the conference?

A: The conference is composed of concurrent panel presentation sessions,  high intensity sessions, poster sessions and roundtables.  There are also Plenary Sessions for large group participation by all conference attendees. For detailed information, please read the guidelines document available at the IAMCR website

Q: Are there any scholarships available for the Conference?

A: IAMCR offers a limited number of travel grants and UNESCO fellowships mainly for scholars from low income countries and to a lesser extent for young scholars. The Scientific Committee of the LOC intends to also offer some scholarships as funds permit. An announcement will be made at the appropriate time, inviting applications from the relevant groups, reflecting a wide range of academic disciplines. When available, grants and scholarships will be posted at the official IAMCR website

SUBMISSIONS

Q: What is the deadline for submitting abstracts?

A: The deadline is February 8, 2011. There will be no extensions. You may submit your abstract through the system

Q: What do I need to do to submit an abstract?

A: To submit your abstract, please follow the steps below:

Step 1:In order to be able to submit an abstract, it is mandatory to create an account on the OCS. Please ensure that the field “Create account as: Author” is ticked.

Step 2: Once logged in, choose “Author” to start to submit your abstract to the IAMCR 2010 Conference and continue with the “Step one of the submission process”.

If needed, please download and read the instructions for abstract submission (PDF, 127 KB).

Q: What length should my abstract be?

A: The abstract should be concise and should not exceed 300 words, unless otherwise a different length required by the Section/Working Group to which you are sending your proposal. The title for abstracts should not exceed 180 characters.

Q: Can I submit more than one proposal?

A: Yes, you can but not to the same Section or Working Group. Most people submit one abstract for the Conference. A maximum of three abstracts to separate Sections and Working Groups may be attempted.  Any attempt to submit the same abstract to different Sections or Working Groups will endanger your chances of having any paper accepted at all. Abstract submissions are strictly monitored.

Q: When can I know if my paper has been accepted?

A:  The final submission of results will be announced officially on or before March 25, 2011. This will be done by the Head of the IAMCR Section or Working Group to which you had originally submitted your request for acceptance. Papers are accepted or declined on the basis of a process of blind peer reviews.

Q: Should I send a copy of my paper with the proposal?

A: No. You do not need to send your paper at the time of abstract submission. Once your proposal is reviewed, you will be advised. If it is accepted you will be asked to upload your paper within a given deadline. The deadline for uploading papers is June 3, 2011.
